This is my most recent hand-pulled lino print, inspired by my own enjoyment of Purim, the joyous holiday which celebrates the salvation of the Jews from the wicked Haman, through the leadership of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai.

I worked this design from my sketches of Breslover Chasidim playing music and dancing in the street at Purim time, watched by parents with their children in costumes, including a small child in a stroller dressed as a tiger. A cat and a bird weave their way amongst the people. A lone soldier looks on.

It is a limited edition of only 10 prints and is for sale on my ‘Buy Lino Prints’ page.

Just taking a short break from Pesach (Passover) preparations to wish you a ‘Chag same’ach’ (Happy holiday).

This is my painting which is hanging in the Municipal Library Art Gallery in Be’er Sheva until April 6th.  It is an oil painting titled – ‘Leaving Egypt, Not Only our Fathers/2012′.  The Group Exhibition is on the theme of ‘Pesach’.

I have worked it from my sketches of people out and about in Jerusalem as well as from my imagination, memory and experience.

Pesach (Passover) is coming soon. However, now I am working on a series of paintings for Purim – our last, most recent Jewish Festival. I did a lot of sketches in Be’er Sheva, where I spent Purim and in Jerusalem, where I spent Sushan Purim.

What is Pesach or Passover?  What is Purim and Sushan Purim?

Pesach/Passover commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.

Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.”

Among all the Jewish holidays, Purim has the singular distinction of having its date determined by whether or not a person lives in a city surrounded by a wall (that has been there since the time of Joshua).

Purim is celebrated by Jews living in cities without a surrounding wall that has been there since the time of Joshua.

Shushan Purim refers to the day after Purim. It commemorates the day when the Jews of Shushan, the Persian capital, finally rested after defeating their enemies.  Sushan Purim is celebrated by Jews living in Jerusalem, an ancient walled city.
